Home Charging for EVs: The smarter and convenient way to charge your EV.

by
May 28, 2025

Which is easier? Refueling your car or charging your phone? When we think of buying a phone, we automatically consider its power requirements and buy a charger along with it. Why don’t we consider a car purchase similarly? Especially given that a car requires way more investment and maintenance to remain up and running?

Imagine buying an electric vehicle (EV), plugging it in at home overnight, just like your smartphone, and waking up to a fully charged car every morning, ready to ride into the sunset.  No toxic fumes, no queues, no detours, and significant savings on fuel costs. Imagine peace of mind. This is the convenience and cost-effectiveness of home EV charging - a vital solution as India embraces electric mobility.

India’s rapid shift towards electric vehicles with multiple benefits for new buyers:

With increasing pollution concerns, rising fuel prices, and government policies promoting clean energy, EV adoption is accelerating across the country. Industry forecasts predict a surge in battery-powered vehicle production by over 140% in 2025, supported by schemes like FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles) and tax incentives. That’s not all. EVs offer multiple benefits like zero tailpipe emissions, lower operational costs compared to petrol or diesel vehicles, and a smaller carbon footprint. However, this development has its own complications.

Complications with a growing Charging Infrastructure:

Many potential EV buyers hesitate due to concerns about charging infrastructure. EV charging stations are still in the growing phase , especially outside major cities.  As a result, public charging stations can be crowded, requiring waiting times and detours.

Moreover, public fast chargers operate on commercial electricity units. Naturally the cost of which is significantly higher than residential units. These charging inconveniences can deter first-time buyers . So, how do we solve this challenge?

Home charging – The right solution for convenience and savings

For a better and convenient experience, it is advised to install an EV charger at home as home charging offers unmatched convenience and cost savings, making EV ownership practical and enjoyable. For this, there are a variety of EV chargers available in the market. Understanding the technology behind EV charging, along with specifications and purpose of each type shall help you make a better purchase decision, based on your requirements.

Types of home EV chargers:

EV chargers are primarily categorized by their charging speed and power source:

  • Level 1 AC Chargers: These use a standard 230V household socket and provide slow charging at about 3.5 kW, using Type 1 (J1772) or Bharat – 001 cables as connectors. They are suitable mostly for two-wheelers as they take around 10-12 hours to charge a four-wheeler.
  • Level 2 AC Chargers: These deliver between 7.2 kW and 22 kW of power, enabling most EVs to charge fully within 3 to 6 hours. Level 2 chargers use AC power with Type 2 (Mennekes), GB/T (AC) or Bharat – 001connectors. They are compatible with the majority of Indian EVs, making them the ideal choice for home charging.

It is worth noting that charging slower  prolongs the life of your battery, which further increases the life of your EV as a whole.

Hence, level 1 and 2 charging is the healthiest for your EV. Since home sockets supply power as AC, Level 1 or Level 2  AC charging is the best option for home-charging.

However, this is not the only benefit that comes with Home EV charging.

Home EV charging is smart

Modern home chargers often feature smart charging capabilities, which connect your EV, charger, and electricity supply to optimize the charging process. They dynamically adjust charging speed based on grid demand and your vehicle’s capacity, ensuring faster, safer charging without overloading your home’s electrical system. Through mobile apps, you can remotely monitor and control charging sessions, receive real-time updates, and even integrate solar energy to power your EV. <Backlink proposition: Our blog here will give you the exact details on the kind of features available in smart chargers>

Smart charging, therefore, not only saves money but also helps balance the electricity grid and reduces environmental impact, .

With the all benefits listed, there is only one question that should be on your mind:

How do you get started on setting up a home charging infrastructure?

Setting up your home charger is simple and safe

Installing a home EV charger involves:

  • Assessing your home’s electrical capacity and upgrading if necessary.
  • Hiring a certified electrician to install a dedicated circuit and securely mount the charger.
  • Ensuring compliance with local safety codes and regulations.
  • Taking precautions like placing the charger in a sheltered area, keeping cables tidy, and regularly inspecting equipment.

Government incentives such as reduced GST rates on EV chargers and tax deductions under Section 80EEB can help offset installation costs, making home charging even more affordable.
